Learn how to use Wordpot.com to find keywords for your website

Consider this example:

You run an on-line shoe store that specializes in designer women’s dress shoes. In order to increase traffic on your site and increase sales you have decided to create an online marketing campaign using pay per click advertising.

The first thing to do is to consider your goals.

  • Drive more traffic to your website.
  • Increase online shoe sales.
  • Stay within a marketing budget.

Next, think of your target market, often this will help you to come up with some initial search terms. In this case our target market is fashion savvy women aged between 20 60. We may want to consider a location which can either be used within your search terms or for geographically targeting your campaign. The advantage of the internet is that your market is much broader in terms of their location to your actual store.

With those important considerations, you then decide to design your marketing campaign. Your aim at this point is to build a list of keywords and create ads that utilize those keywords. Advertisements’ that use the same words that a person is searching for will have a greater click through rate (ctr) i.e. the number of clicks your advertisement gets compared to the number of times it is shown. Keep this in mind during the following steps.

To begin with, think of search terms related to your site. In this example we came up with a few terms: shoes, women shoes, dress shoes, and designer shoes.

Now, we open Wordpot.com and type in our first term ‘shoes.’

Wordpot.com returns a very large Total Search Volume for this term meaning that this is a very broad keyword. We can see from the results that the word shoes is included in many different searches, some of these are not even related to our store. E.g. ‘Skate Shoes’, ‘Mens Shoes’. We don’t have an unlimited marketing budget so we will probably want to add these keywords to our negative keyword list. This will mean that someone searching for those terms will not see our advertisement and as a result we will not be wasting our money paying for advertising to people who are not interested in our products. We may even decide that shoes is too broad a term and not bother advertising on it at all.

One of the suggested searches that Wordpot returns is ‘womens shoes’ this was a term that we considered when first thinking of keywords, So, we click on the word to do a new search on the term ’womens shoes’. We immediately see some promising keywords, people have been searching on the term ‘wide womans shoes’ this is a new search term that we should add to our list and consider creating an add with the words ’wide womans shoes’ in it.

We next conduct a new search on the term ‘dress shoes’, again Wordpot shows us some great keyword suggestions that we had not considered, ‘cheap womens dress shoes’ and ‘womens dress shoes hushpuppies’. This might give you some ideas, how about including the brand name of each of the shoes that you carry in your store? Again try these terms in Wordpot so that you can see what popular searches are and what are not. You may find there is a large demand for a specific product; perhaps you should create an advertisement specifically for that product.

You have now succeeded in finding functional keywords that target people who search for your products. This should help increase your click-through rate (ctr) and return on investment (roi) i.e. the return in sales compared to the amount you spent on advertising.

Some other ways to increase your ctr is to use action related words in the title of your advertisement for example ‘buy womens dress shoes’. These types of titles compel people searching to click on your advertisement.

A key part of online marketing is to continue working on your campaign. You may notice seasonal changes or even swings in popularity of specific products. By continuing to watch your campaign and examine keywords with Wordpot you will stay on top of these changes and be the first to catch new opportunities.

It is important to have a few different ads and to watch the statistics on them over time. You may have to remove poorly performing ads or keywords and add new ones. Finally, look at your positioning on each keyword in Google, msn or yahoo and try to increase your pay per click (ppc) to be placed in a better position, you will see the best results if you are placed on the first page (top 10).

As you can see Wordpot.com is an invaluable resource for any online marketer. We know that by using our keyword finder you will be able to discover your marketing niche and enjoy increased success with your online endeavors.

We hope that you find this case study useful when designing your own marketing campaign. There are many more tips and tricks to online advertising not included in this example, we encourage you to send us your success stories when using Wordpot.com as we always like to hear how people use our website.
